Rout-ing Exhibition

Rout-ing...
Written by Carmen Chan (2021)

Habits, mundane objects, common feelings, unconscious desires... Our everyday life is composed of things that are so familiar that they become difficult to be experienced anew. The Route-ing exhibition was curated to be a playful experiment with our own everydayness.

It was intended to uncover the hidden individual stories behind humans, objects and their place in space. We hoped that by immersing themselves in the dynamic experience of object placement, visitors can explore the different ways humans interact with objects on the street, in shops, hawker stalls, wet markets and personal rooms.

By engrossing in the variety of sensory experiences, and playing an active role in different missions and games, visitors are able to understand how these myriads of placements promote unique perceptions, interconnections, the geometry and hence the political tensions of subjects—we, common people, need to be fully conscious that, we are the designers and producer of our own rights.

This exhibition is followed by the research project: Negotiations in Public Spaces.

In Sheung Wan, negotiations happen when two or more entities collide, which happens rapidly due to the limited street area. The ROUTE-ING exhibition re-conceptualised and rebuilt the actual situation of a busy street in the given space, and providing external force to encourage diverse interactions and possibilities.

Boxes are the most common obstacles found on the street, their richness in variety(shapes, sizes, colours) provides almost infinite possibilities and diversity of interaction. They are scattered all over the floor, but mainly in the middle of the open space which also acted as a playground for the Jammed task. Meanwhile, it helped to guide and separate the incoming and leaving visitors.

The visitors were submerged in this reproduction of a busy and crowded street, but this time we encouraged them to interact with the obstacles. Throw away all the practical consideractions, there was no time limits, objectives and private properties in the playground.

Mook: Exhibition report

Here we share our findings at the exhibition regarding the behaviour of visitors, changes in the arrangements of interactive exhibits and route of visitors.

We draw connections from the above information to the actual scenarios of a street.
